UPDATE 2 ON CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE – SATURDAY 04 SEPTEMBER 19.00 HRS

We are pleased to advise that there have been no further major incidents in the Christchurch area although aftershocks are still being felt. Christchurch Airport was reopened this afternoon. As far as we know all flights are scheduled to depart on time tomorrow Sunday 05 September. Power has been restored to 90% of Christchurch locations although the city centre remains largely closed to the public. Most hotels we work with are open and fully operational, although the Copthorne Durham Hotel is closed due to some structural damage. Any guests booked in to that hotel are being accommodated in the Copthorne Central or Millennium Hotel. Be assured we are checking on any clients heading to Christchurch and assisting them in any way we can.

EARTHQUAKE IN CHRISTCHURCH

Please be advised there was an earthquake 30km to the West of Centre Christchurch at 04.35 this morning (Saturday 04 September 2010). At first it was measured at 7.4 on the richter scale, but was later downgraded to 7.1.

A State of Emergency has been declared in the Christchurch/Canterbury area – there is major damage to infrastructure in the area – there is no electricity in central Christchurch and water is in short supply. People are being advised to stay out of central Christchurch until further notice while damage is being further assessed.

This morning the airport has been closed and all flights have been postponed until tomorrow at this stage. Authorities are checking the airport & hope to open it this afternoon, however we are awaiting update on that. Some people have sustained injures and many buildings are damaged, however there have been NO DEATHS.
